Paula Badosa is not competing at the Paris Olympics but at the 2024 Citi Open in Washington, where she'll start against native player Sofia Kenin.
The Spaniard hasn't had a very good year overall, as her results have been all over the place, but her tennis is not to blame for that. When she did play she was very good and showed a competitive level.
As it has been with her in the past two years, it's mostly availability, and it's been very spotty because she has a chronic injury that won't go away and will continue to hamper her for as long as she's playing.
Kenin has had a similar struggle in the past. She's not as injured as she was in years past, but her tennis has greatly suffered because of it. She clearly lacked confidence, and the American is 7-17 this year, and it doesn't seem like she'll turn things around anytime soon.
Being back home on home soil is certainly something that could help her. Kenin's form hasn't been that great, as her last win came in Eastbourne over Daria Saville.
Badosa has a more recent win, playing at a solid level at Wimbledon, so if we look at their tennis, it's clear that the Spaniard has the upper hand. She's played far better this year and far more consistently overall.
One could argue that she's the better player overall, but it's Kenin who has won the major in the past. The match being played in Washington is certainly something to remember, but overall, her tennis backs up Badosa.
It's just whether her back will prevent her from playing at her best level. Unfortunately, that is just a coin toss at this moment.
We have never seen this match unfold on a tennis court before, which is surprising as both have been around for a while. On the one hand, we have two players who can hit the ball as cleanly as anybody, and we have Badosa, who is known to have a decent serve.
That should benefit the Spaniard overall. One thing to note, though, is that Kenin has looked great in doubles all this time, so her problem might be mostly mental. In fact, we know it's not a skill issue because her talent is relatively well-documented.

Kenin has played in Washington in the past and did well, even though her most recent experience was a first-round loss. Badosa has never played in Washington, which might be a minor problem, but she should be able to win this match.
She's played better tennis all year long, including recently, and seems more confident in her game. The back is an issue, but she should be able to manage that.
Prediction: Paula Badosa to win in two sets.
