Katie Boulter will begin her 2024 Indian Wells campaign against a very tricky player who will be a threat to beat her.
Fresh off the biggest trophy of her career in San Diego, Boulter faces a huge problem in the opening round of the Indian Wells Open. That's Camila Giorgi, and she's a problem because she's a nightmare to play in conditions like those in Indian Wells.
It's a slower court with somewhat of a higher bounce, especially during the day. That means that Giorgi will have enough time to set up her devastating baseline play.
That could be good if she hits more than she misses, which is likely, but it can also be very bad if she misses more than she hits. The second scenario is equally likely; that's how volatile her tennis can be.
When it comes to the overall matchup, expect very few slices and mostly the players smashing the ball from one side to another.
Head-to-head:
We haven't really seen this matchup before. Boulter was previously playing on the lower level for much of her career. That's not the case anymore, though, as the Brit has been on fire this year and will look to keep that going against Giorgi in Indian Wells.
I think there is a pretty good chance that she does because the Italian isn't playing her best tennis right now and is dealing with some off-court drama as well. All of that can be pretty distracting, so it's not impossible to see her struggling here.
Boulter will have to overcome the hugely draining week in San Diego, where she won her maiden WTA 500 trophy. If she handles all of her emotions, she should be good here.

I think Boulter wins this one simply because she's played better and will have perfect conditions for her style of play here.
