Iga Swiatek Extends Lead Over Aryna Sabalenka After Warsaw Win In Latest WTA Rankings

WTA world number one Iga Swiatek established a cushion over world number two and closest challenger Aryna Sabalenka in the rankings.

The latest WTA Rankings see Swiatek maintain a firm grip over the Belarusian, after winning her first WTA title on home turf at the weekend. Swiatek beat the weather and two opponents on the same day to win the 2023 Poland Open.

Swiatek adds 175 points for her title run in which she did not drop a single set all week. She will sit in top spot with 9,490 points which is 645 points more than Sabalenka in second place on 8,845 points. Elena Rybakina remains in third place, and like Sabalenka, is taking an extended time off after Wimbledon.

The trio will be in action in the next WTA 1000 stop in Montreal in the second week of August. That could leave Jessica Pegula with a clear run in reclaiming the number three ranking. The American is playing at this week's Citi Open in Washington. Tunisia's Ons Jabeur and Caroline Garcia swap fifth and sixth spots between each other.

However, there are no ins and outs in the world's Top 10 this week, but that could change slightly after Washington. Elsewhere, Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto bagged a maiden WTA title in Lausanne, winning a quartet of three-set matches during the week.

Cocciaretto rises to a career-high number 30 after besting Clara Burel in Sunday's marathon final. Another first-time WTA titlist is Arantxa Rus, who defeated German wild card Noma Noha Akugue in the Hamburg European Open final.

Rus is the oldest first-time Tour-level champion in 17 years and is making her Top 50 debut at the age of 32. The Dutch lefty rises 18 spots to a career-high ranking of number 42 on 1,182 points. But Rus isn't the only veteran who made waves this past week.

Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, a former world number 12, has enjoyed a resurgent year, culminating with a Top 100 return. Wickmayer was outside the Top 300 at the start of the season, but has won three ITF titles in 2023, and is coming off a semifinal finish in Warsaw - her first at Tour level since 2017.
