Serena Williams revealed a touching story that detailed the advice her daughter gave after losing to Emma Raducanu at the Cincinnati Open.
Williams is officially a retired player after she bid farewell at the US Open. The 23-time Grand Slam champion lost in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic in the last match of her legendary career.
Although Williams' US Open appearance understandably received the most attention, her penultimate tournament at the Cincinnati Open also generated much interest, especially because of the draw.
The 40-year-old faced Emma Raducanu, the defending US Open champion at the time, in the opening round. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Briton comfortably won the blockbuster matchup.
Williams might feel slightly unfortunate. Raducanu has struggled throughout most of the reason for consistency, but she found inspiration against the seven-time Wimbledon champion and produced one of her best performances of the season.
Although the loss was disappointing, Williams mentioned in an appearance on the Drew Barrymore Show the words from her daughter after the match that made her want to cry.
"Absolutely. Apparently, she was saying like, 'Go, Momma, I'm so proud of you,' and I was like, 'What?'. So then she comes back after I had lost in Cincinnati, she came back and she's like, 'It's okay, Momma, you just have to do what you feel,' and I literally wanted to cry. It was like, 'Do what you feel. Do what your heart tells you.' It was the sweetest thing ever."
"I just was worried I'd get distracted because I would be like, 'Wait is she drinking? Is she doing this? She came to a match once, like super brief, and I was like, 'Oh my God, is she wearing sun cream?' It's nuts."
In her retirement announcement, Williams stated that she wanted to have more kids, and continuing to play tennis would make that more challenging.
