Simona Halep is set to compete at Wimbledon for the first time since her memorable run to the title at SW19, and she cannot hide her excitement about returning to the event.

The Romanian achieved a childhood dream by winning Wimbledon in 2019. In the final, she hammered the seven-time champion Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2. It was undoubtedly one of the best performances ever seen in a women's final at the tournament.

Unfortunately, Halep has not had a chance to compete at the third Grand Slam of the year since then. Wimbledon was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Halep was injured for the 2021 iteration of the event.

Although the two-time Grand Slam champion has had some difficult moments this year, she showed some positive signs on grass ahead of Wimbledon with semifinal appearances at the Birmingham Classic and the Bad Homburg Open.

However, Halep will still need to raise her level even further to claim the title at SW19 for a second time. She will hope her new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who coached Serena Williams, can help her regain her winning mentality.

The happy memories from her 2019 run could also help Halep. She admitted to connecting with the Wimbledon courts, which may give her additional confidence during the event.

"I feel good. I feel better … I feel confident. I had good matches last week on grass. But on grass you never know. I'm just looking forward for every day I practise here to get in shape, to get the feeling of the court. Now I have a connection with the court because in 2019 I played really well, so I have great memories."

Halep also discussed how excited she was to be back at Wimbledon for the first time in three years but insisted she is focused on improving every day and working hard.

"I feel happy to be back because I didn't play since 2019, so it's pretty exciting. I don’t want to stop. I’m not thinking about that. I feel like I can improve more. I can be a better person, a better player on court, so I'm looking forward to doing that."
