Paula Badosa will become world number 2 on Monday after she reached the semifinals of the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
The 2021 Indian Wells champion, Paula Badosa, became one of the best players in the world after her breakthrough. After Ashleigh Barty's retirement, she also became a contender for world no. 2 spot in the WTA Rankings, and now she will finally reach it.
After defeating Ons Jabeur in three sets in the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix quarterfinals, Badosa earned enough points to jump over Barbora Krejcikova, who is currently recovering from an injury, in the WTA Rankings.
The Spaniard's journey was long, but finally, she will get closer to the spot that she dreams of. As of April 18th, 2022, Badosa was ranked 3rd with 4885 points to her name, while the second Krejcikova had 4975 points.
Ahead of both of them is Iga Swiatek, who seems to be untouchable right now with 6711 points next to her name. Now, by making it to the semifinals, the Spanish player made sure that she'll jump the Czech player by only two points, increasing her points total to 5045 points, while Krejcikova's would be at 5043 points.
In the next round, Badosa will play against Aryna Sabalenka, who is one place behind her in the rankings, and therefore, the Spaniard can increase the gap by winning the match against her. It can be the Belarusian who will challenge Badosa for the world no. 2 spot in the remainder of the season.
The fight is very close, with less than 1000 points separating the second and the seventh place in the WTA Rankings, and to keep the spot, Badosa will continue playing great tennis and, most importantly, win big titles that will earn her enough points to keep her lead over her competitors.
