In recent important matches, Coco Gauff feels that she has risen to the occasion and is letting go of some of her negative court habits.
During her match against Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Masters, Gauff claimed she sensed herself reverting to a pessimistic and self-critical frame of mind, but she was able to catch herself in time.
“I was reverting back to old mentalities. I got to a point where I was being too negative on myself. And I said if I was going to lose, I’m not going to lose like this. So I had to change. And that’s what I did." said Gauff.
Gauff needs to consistently win matches like that if she ever wants to win a grand slam championship and she knows it too.
“These are the type of players I need to have to beat if I want to win a Grand Slam. So these matches are giving me more confidence. For me I needed
these matches leading up into the US Open. I think you guys can see on
my forehand and my serve there’s definitely been a drastic improvement. I think that right now I feel like I’m rising to the occasion.
Whereas before I felt like I was almost crumbling to the pressure
because I was trying to deflect it.” - added Gauff.
She will compete in the first round against a qualifier who will be named later today.
