Serena Williams' next tournament will be the Canadian Open in Toronto, and home favorite Leylah Fernandez hopes to compete against the tennis legend during her comeback to the sport.
The Canadian Open is set to be the 23-time Grand Slam champion's second singles tournament since returning from 12 months out with an injury she sustained at last year's Wimbledon Championships.
Williams emotionally returned to London this year at the third Grand Slam of the season. Her level was good for long periods in the opening round against Harmony Tan, but she ultimately lost 5-7, 6-1, and 5-7.
The 40-year-old is scheduled to play at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open. Williams has not played both tournaments in the same season since 2015. She is looking to get some match practice before the US Open.
Fernandez, last year's runner-up at Flushing Meadows, was thrilled when Williams returned to the sport. She sees the six-time US Open champion as an inspiration.
“I was very excited. Tennis has missed her. She’s a big legend. Just seeing her back on court, competing and giving it her all and not giving up is a true inspiration. I know that kids and professional players are looking up to her.”
The Canadian does not hide how much of a fan of Williams she is. The 19-year-old wants to face her on the court before she retires because she is a legend who has done so much for tennis.
“Hopefully, I can share the court with her before she retires. Hopefully, that’s not too soon. Hopefully, I can play a match against her. I just want to be able to tell everyone that I was able to play a match against Serena Williams. She’s just a legend.”
Fernandez has an exciting future ahead of her. Being inspired by legendary figures like Williams will certainly not harm her over the coming years.
