Former Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady has shed light on her recent absence from the tour, just when it looked like she was past her injury nightmare.

Disaster struck for the American player, who announced on Instagram that she succumbed to another injury setback during the off-season and will be out for a considerable period without giving a specific timeline. Brady revealed that she would require another surgery on her knee.

It was only in mid-July last year when a "super thrilled" Brady made her long-awaited comeback to tennis after two years of nursing injuries. She injured her foot at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati back in 2021.

At that year's US Open, Brady was hit with a double whammy when she felt a crack in her right knee in practice, which was diagnosed as a stress fracture. After being treated for both injuries, she returned to full-time competition in the second half of last season, playing in five WTA tournaments.

But in her last match against Magda Linette in Beijing, she retired after only four games and hasn't returned to action in 2024. But in an update that has clearly shocked tennis fans and her fellow peers, Brady revealed she is set to undergo right knee surgery, which will require an "extensive" recovery process.

"I wanted to let everyone know that unfortunately during off-season I had another setback and I’ll be having surgery on my knee. With this surgery, I will be out for quite some time as the recovery and rehab process is extensive."

It is unlikely Brady will be around a match court anytime soon, and he has chosen to take a temporary role as an undergraduate coach at the University of California, Los Angeles, helping the women's tennis team. She is an alumna of UCLA, having played for two years there before she turned pro.

"I've decided to enroll back into UCLA for the spring quarter and help the women's tennis team by being an (under) graduate assistant coach. I'm bummed not to be competing during this time, but I am very excited to be a part of the UCLA tennis team again."
