The dynamic doubles duo of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula surged into the 2023 Miami Open quarterfinals, demonstrating exceptional teamwork once again.
Despite Gauff's earlier exit in the singles event at the WTA 1000 tournament, she has shown no signs of slowing down alongside Pegula in the doubles competition. Gauff and Pegula, who previously captured the 2023 Qatar Open title together, have their sights set on extending their winning in Miami.
The second-seeded pair, which is the first-seeded pair at the event after the withdrawal of the top seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakvoa, navigated their way through the initial rounds, overcoming the Fruhvirtova sisters Linda and Brenda, and in the second round, they took on a talented team of Anhelina Danilina and Asia Muhammad.
After securing a break in the fourth game, Gauff and Pegula were immediately broken back, only to fend off two break points in the seventh game. Eventually, the American pair clinched the first set with a decisive 6-4 win after breaking their opponents in the tenth game.
The second set saw Gauff and Pegula maintain their momentum, leading early after breaking in the second game. Despite serving for the match at 5-3, they were unable to seal the victory just yet.
Danilina and Muhammad staged a brief comeback, breaking the American duo again and serving for the set at 6-5. Unfazed, Gauff and Pegula regained control, breaking back and ultimately triumphing in a closely-contested tie-break, 7-4.
After their second win at the event, Gauff and Pegula's next challenge will be facing the victors of the match between Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens, and Monica Niculescu and Alicja Rosolska.
The sixth-seeded part of Hunters and Mertens will be favoured against Niculescu and Rosolska, but it will be Gauff and Pegula who will be hoping to go all the way as the highest-seeded pair at the tournament.
