Venus Williams missed the majority of the 2022 season, but she’s getting closer to a return after initially returning briefly during the Australian summer this year.

Williams has battled many injuries and other physical problems in recent years. The last time she truly played a full schedule was in 2019 when she played 34 matches. That, in itself, is not a huge schedule, but compared to the handful of matches she averages in recent times, it was a much more busy time for the American player.

She played only four matches in 2022, losing all of them, but returned this year in Auckland, winning her first match back against compatriot Katie Volynets. She played well in the next match as well but got beaten by Lin Zhu.

The Australian Open wasn’t meant to be for her because Venus Williams was forced to pull out due to yet another injury. It was an unfortunate turn of events after two very encouraging matches in Auckland.

It’s been a while since then, and she hasn’t yet returned to tennis, even though the return is getting nearer, as she hinted at potentially returning during the upcoming clay season.

She was holding a Q&A session on her fashion brand EleVen's Instagram account and responded to a question concerning her return.

"I would love to! That's the plan. We will see."

It’s a very encouraging sign that Williams is getting nearer to returning, but with her, it’s always a question mark. While her ambition and hope shouldn’t be questioned, it’s ultimately her body that decides, and that’s never a certain thing.

Time will tell whether she ends up returning at one of the upcoming events, such as the Madrid Open, the Italian Open, or even Roland Garros, or whether that return gets pushed back to the grass season, which is more her speed. During the same Q&A, she also explained what is her goal.

"To reach my potential and play fearless. This time has been tough as I've been out a long time now. But all I can do is do the work and have a little fun too."
