Noted tennis coach Rick Macci is certain that his former protege Serena Williams will make a comeback to tennis, at least in doubles.
Serena Williams is away from tennis right now, technically forever, because she retired from the sport at the 2022 US Open. That decision was final, according to Williams herself; however, since then, there have been minor hints that it might not be too final after all.
Williams herself refused to shut down the possibility of playing again, though, stopping short of committing to playing in the future. It’s a lot of mixed signaling from Serena, who could possibly be enjoying the publicity the conversation brings.
There seem to be, however, lots of rumblings about her possibly playing again, which is exciting for fans, but it’s not very likely when all the facts are stated. She doesn’t seem to be practicing or really working on a comeback at the moment.
Surely, with her talent, she could waltz onto the court and be competitive to a degree, but there aren’t strong hints that she could come back. Still, her former coach Rick Macci, who used to coach some really big names back in the day, such as Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and, of course, both Williams sisters, thinks Serena is likely to come back at least in doubles with Venus if not singles.
"Everybody is asking will Serena Williams play again. My answer is in doubles for sure with the one she has been skipping and holding hands with since age 9."
It was an interesting comment from Macci, who, in fairness, does know both of them better than most. Venus Williams is, of course, still an active player, even though not playing as much as she used to. As for Serena, time will tell, but for now, minor rumors are all there is.
