2022 has not been kind to Garbine Muguruza so far, and she opened up to her followers worldwide after her latest setback at this year's Wimbledon Championships.

At her best, the Spaniard is one of the most formidable players in the women's game. Muguruza's powerful and imposing style took her to the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon titles.

Although Muguruza has not claimed a Grand Slam since her triumph at Wimbledon in 2017, she ended last year by winning her maiden WTA Finals title by beating Anett Kontaveit in the final. That raised expectations ahead of 2022.

Unfortunately, the 28-year-old has struggled badly this year. Her only quarterfinal in the opening six months of the season was in Doha in February. She has only managed three victories since that run in Qatar.

Her latest loss was a heavy 4-6, 0-6 defeat to Greet Minnen. Those disappointments are clearly weighing on Muguruza, leading to the 2017 champion at SW19 releasing a post on social media about her struggles.

These last six months have been very hard. Dealing with defeats, frustration, and pressure. Competing in RG and Wimbledon, tournaments that I love, with all the preparation and effort that my whole team has made, not finding my tennis has been emotionally, a very hard blow. To my followers and those who place their expectation on me, just to say that I'm sorry and I hope that the remaining six months of 22 are more bearable and I can at least find those good feelings again.

Hopefully, Muguruza will receive support from her followers. She is clearly trying hard on the court. Her game is not clicking right now, but that does not mean she needs to apologize for those difficulties.

Muguruza is still a great champion. Her form will undoubtedly improve at some point, and she will be a threat to win big tournaments again when that happens.
