Emma Raducanu will drop out of the Top 75 on the WTA Tour after she lost already in the first round of the 2022 US Open.
Raducanu was facing a difficult task at the 2022 US Open. She needed to defend 2,000 points from last year's triumph if she wanted to keep her spot in the WTA Rankings.
In the first round of the tournament, she was facing one of the most experienced players in the draw, World No. 40 Alize Cornet. It was the French player who stopped Iga Swiatek's winning streak this year at Wimbledon.
Therefore, Raducanu knew she would have to play her best tennis to advance. Throughout the match, the Brit made a lot of errors. The counter of her unforced errors stopped at 31.
On the other hand, her opponent added 22 winners, while Raducanu had only 15. Despite a very good start, the 2021 US Open champion soon lost the lead in the first set and lost it 3-6.
In the second set, Raducanu led 3-1 but couldn't handle the pressure. After 100 minutes of play, the British player left the tournament already in the first round, losing 3-6, 3-6.
Her first-round exit is also a reason why she will find herself out of the Top 75 of the WTA Rankings after the tournament. Raducanu's exact position will depend on how other players perform.
For example, her compatriot Harriet Dart can become the British No. 1 player if she wins one more match at the US Open.
For Raducanu, on the other hand, this will be a restart in her tennis career. She rose to tennis stardom only 12 months ago, and during those 12 months, she learned plenty of valuable lessons. Now, she will have to start over again and prove her qualities.
