Emma Raducanu is flying back home to London, presumably to seek consultation on whether she needs to undergo some tests over her troublesome back injury.
It's been a stop-start clay-court campaign for the British tennis sensation. She reached the quarterfinal in Stuttgart and the round of 16 in Madrid but was forced to retire from her first-round match against Bianca Andreescu at the Italian Open.
Raducanu first started experiencing discomfort in her back while playing Anhelina Kalinina in the last 16 match, but was able to continue the match, which she lost in three sets.
It would have been wise for Raducanu to withdraw from the last major stop before Roland Garros, which was in Rome. But she proceeded to play the event and was slated to play Andreescu in a battle between two former teenage US Open champions.
However, she retired midway through the second set of their marquee showdown, having lost the first set 6-2. The 19-year-old told the physio on the court that she could not move. Following the match, she explained that playing was probably a mistake but one that she would learn from.
According to the Telegraph, Raducanu is reportedly on his way back to the United Kingdom to assess the nature and severity of her injury. Playing the French Open is obviously on the back of her mind, with the tournament kicking off in under two weeks. But the US Open champion won't rush her comeback.
"But for sure I need to make sure my back is fully right, however long that takes. I need to just keep on it. I don’t want to play my next match with a feeling of limitation because I think that I learned my lesson from this week, when to push, and when not to push. Probably today wasn’t right."
