Emma Raducanu could not complete her first-round match at the 2022 Italian Open because she was forced to retire with a back injury.
In the battle between former and current US Open champions, a lot was anticipated from Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu. It was the Canadian who came out on top, leading 6-2, 2-1, when the British tennis sensation was hampered with a back injury.
The back issues arose in Madrid last week, and Raducanu tried to manage it leading up to Rome, but ultimately, it proved too much to overcome and required an off-court medical treatment during the match against Andreescu.
Speaking after the match, Raducanu was "disappointed" that her campaign at the Foro Italico ended prematurely. Her first full season on the WTA Tour continues to be littered with injury struggles.
"I was definitely disappointed with how today went, but I guess I wanted to give it a try. I never really knew how bad it was until I kind of went out there. I'm still learning when it's right to push my body and push through it, and when's not."
"I guess that's something I'm kind of learning at these tournaments. The difference is I'm probably doing it at bigger tournaments, not smaller tournaments on the way up."
Despite the recent setback, Raducanu is happy with how things have gone so far on clay. The 19-year-old was a quarterfinalist in Stuttgart and reached the round of 16 in Madrid. Her retirement is expected to be only a precaution with the French Open coming up soon.
"I think the last few weeks have been really positive. I've learned a lot about myself and my game has definitely improved on this surface. But for sure I need to make sure my back is fully right, however long that takes. I need to just keep on it. I don't want to play my next match with a feeling of limitation because I think that I learned my lesson from this week, when to push, and when not to push. Probably today wasn't right."
