Elena Rybakina vs Anastasia Potapova: 2024 Brisbane International - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Elena Rybakina played really well in Australia last year, and she's looked pretty good so far this year, and now she will be challenged by Anastasia Potapova at the 2024 Brisbane International.

Elena Rybkina already has a couple of matches behind her belt this season, thanks to playing at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi. She did well there but is looking even better in Australia, and that's no surprise.

The courts Down Under simply fit her style of play very well. She's an aggressive player by nature, and the speed works well with that. Potapova is a similar player, and she's certainly one that is capable of beating Rybakina on her best day. This promises to be a really good match, so how might it go?

Head-to-head:

They have only played once so far, and that match didn't happen on the WTA Tour. It happened back in 2018 on the ITF Tour in Rome on clay. Potapova proved much better, winning easily in two sets, but since then, Rybakina has looked more comfortable in the professionals.

Prediction:

The match itself could go either way, but it will largely depend on who the better hitter is on the day. Neither really plays with much variety in their game, which makes this one a rather simple equation. Rybakina has the better serve, and it could be the difference maker if she has a good day.

So far, it's been going well in that regard, and she'll need it. Potapova can be streaky, and if she finds her rhythm, that might be trouble for Rybakina. The serve could break up that rhythm, so it will be crucial.

Outside of that, it's mostly how they perform from the baseline. I think Rybakina will do better, and that's why she'll win the match in two sets.

Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in two sets.
