Elena Rybakina, like many other top players on the WTA Tour, is on fire early in 2024, reaching the Brisbane International quarterfinals.
It seems like all the top players prepared well for the new season, as they are not only winning matches, but literally destroying their opponents along the way. Aryna Sabalenka showed it, and Coco Gauff followed her.
Now, the 2022 Wimbledon champion adds her name to the list of players who dominated in a match in an incredible fashion. In her first match in Brisbane, the Kazakhstani player won in two sets, but a 6-4, 6-1 win wasn't considered as dominant as some of her other rivals.
But what Rybakina did in the second round was quite incredible, especially given that Elise Mertens, who she took on, was on a six-match winning streak after winning the Tunisia Open last year.
The world no. 4 got an early break in the opening set, but it was a hard-fought one, as she needed five break points in the second game to eventually convert it and make a good use of her chances.
Shen then had to defend her own serve through a deuce, but after that, the reigning Indian Wells champion showed little struggles. Mertens won one game to make it 1-3 in the first set, but little did she know that it would be her last game won in the match.
Rybakina won the following three games in the first set to make it 6-1, and she had no mercy with her in the second set of the match, even though the Belgian player managed to create some chances.
However, Rybakina was just too good, and after only 57 minutes, she won the match 6-1, 6-0 to reach the 2024 Brisbane International quarterfinals, awaiting the winner of the match between the sixth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova and the eleventh-seeded Anastasia Potapova.
