Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova is out of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after losing to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain.
Vondrousova's win last year was a major surprise. She shocked herself and the world by going to the final at SW19 and then beating Ons Jabeur in the final. The reason is simple, and the Czech player spoke about it after the win as well.
She's not a good grass player, as she lacks experience on the surface. Although she is one of the best players in the world, the low-bouncing surface is not her favorite, and this match proved that better than any.
It's not that black-white because Vondrousova likely didn't play this match fully healthy. Her last match before going to London was played at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin, where she slipped badly and injured herself.
She retired from that match and likely still feels the effects of that until today. Her level wasn't very good; it wasn't even close to what she did last year, and her motivated opponent took advantage of that.
Besides not playing as well, Vondrousova also made some bad choices in crucial moments of the match. Bouzas Maneiro hits the ball really hard, which was also a problem for her opponent at times during the match.
Still, the loss largely falls on Vondrousova because she just didn't play a good match. The opening set started with an early break for her opponent, but even when she broke back, Vondrousova didn't look too confident.
Too many mistakes gave her opponent another break, and this time around, the Spaniard held it to win the first set 6-4. The second set was similar because Bouzas Maneiro broke her opponent's serve early once more.
Vondrousova then broke back but threw away a 40-0 lead on her serve to give her opponent yet another break. That was the crucial one, as she never got it back, losing the match 4-6, 2-6. This loss also means that she will also leave the Top 10 in the WTA Rankings.
