Coco Gauff vs Magdalena Frech: 2024 Australian Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Coco Gauff has been playing solid tennis at this year's Australian Open, but will Magdalena Frech be the first one to beat her this year?

The 19-year-old is unbeaten this year, as she has won all eight matches she has played so far. Five of them came in Auckland in the first week of the season, where the American successfully defended her trophy from last year.

Beating Elina Svitolina in the final wasn't easy, but it was the perfect way to start. The run continued in Melbourne as she added three solid wins, with the final one against compatriot Alycia Parks being quite impressive.

Up next for her is Magdalena French, a solid player but also one that has clear limitations. She loves to play on hard courts and could be a problem for Gauff under the right circumstances.

Head-to-head:

Oddly enough, Gauff and Frech never played against each other despite both competing on the WTA Tour for a while. The American has a pretty balanced style of play with some affinity to attack as of late. Her forehand can be hit and miss, but her backhand and speed are good enough weapons to beat most players.

Frech will need to outplay her from the baseline to win because the 2023 US Open champion will likely send many balls back. If the Polish player can't find some good solution from the baseline, she's going to be in big trouble.

Prediction:

Frech is a capable hitter, but I'm not sure she's good enough to overcome Gauff. That would be someone like Jelena Ostapenko, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. Frech doesn't have that type of hitting and likely will struggle to back the American.

Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in two sets.
