Coco Gauff is playing superb tennis at the 2024 Madrid Open, but will she keep it going against compatriot Madison Keys?
The young American started her 2024 clay season last week at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and looked solid before suffering a pretty upsetting loss to Marta Kostyuk.
It was a match she could have won and possibly should have won, but it didn't work out. Overall, the experience was positive, though, as it gave her some matches ahead of the Madrid Open, which likely contributed to things really clicking in the Spanish capital.
She got her first double bagel win in Madrid and then added another win to her tally. Now, she has a chance to book the quarter-final, but it won't be easy, as she's facing Keys, who can be as tough as any player on the WTA Tour.
Head-to-head:
Gauff and Keys have, of course, played a handful of times so far. The H2H score is 2-2, with the most recent meeting going the way of the more experienced American player. It was played last year on the grass in Eastbourne. Keys can be quite devastating on that surface, but the same goes for Madrid.
Her serve and powerful strokes can certainly give her trouble at this altitude. Overall, though, Gauff is well equipped to handle Keys, unless the 29-year-old finds her absolutely best level.
Coco Gauff | Madison Keys | |
---|---|---|
2 | H2H | 2 |
3 | Rank | 20 |
20 | Age | 29 |
21-6 | 2024 W/L | 5-3 |
196-88 | Career W/L | 365-210 |
Prediction:
Keys might give Gauff some trouble, but most likely, we'll see the younger American extend the rallies long enough to get an error from Keys. If she does that consistently through many games, then she will likely win this match.
Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in two sets.
