Aryna Sabalenka joked that she was the 'Queen of Double Faults in 2022' after struggling on her serve.
Sabalenka finished seventh in the WTA Race in 2022, and therefore, she qualified for the 2022 WTA Finals, where she will play in the Nancy Richey Group.
The Belarusian was drawn alongside Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari in what will be a difficult quest for her. However, an even more interesting stat accompanies Sabalenka at the year-end event, as she will now surely finish the year as the player with the most double faults.
Sabalenka is one of the players who decides a lot of points after her serve, either by an ace or a double fault. In 2022, she hit 227 aces, and ahead of the WTA Finals, she was the ninth-best player in this stat.
On the other hand, she hit by far the most double faults on the WTA Tour. While the second Ekaterina Alexandrova hit 289 double faults, Sabalenka hit 398 double faults and has no one to challenge her in this infamous stat.
Ahead of the year-end event, she spoke to WTA Insider about her year as well as the infamous stat, saying it was a miracle she made it to the WTA Finals after hitting so many double faults.
"I feel super happy to be here, especially after such a challenging year. I feel like it's a miracle for me to be here, and I'm just enjoying every second."
"Being in the Top 10 even with such a tough year, this is something incredible. I'm really proud of myself, how I handled all of these challenges. I'm proud of my team that they were there and they just support me."
"This year I was fighting with myself, which is a completely different fight, and I learned a lot about myself. I think this season started as the worst season, but at the end, I think it was the best season for me because I learned a lot, and I became even stronger, and mentally stronger."
"I don't know what else can happen, what can really put me under stress, you know? Of course, after you say that, something is going to happen. I think I was the Queen of Double Faults this season. If you guys have any questions, I think my coach is here somewhere."
