Iga Swiatek's incredible 37-match winning streak came to an end at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, thanks to Alize Cornet's superb performance.
Swiatek entered the grass-court major on a 35-match winning streak, and she won her first two matches at the event, despite losing a set in her second. In the third round, she set up a meeting with France's Alize Cornet.
The French player admitted that this year might be her final on the WTA Tour, and if that is the case, she is certainly making it a memorable one. She played superb tennis in Australia, reaching her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final.
She played well at the French Open as well, but an injury cut her run short. Now at Wimbledon, she's playing some inspired tennis again, as she ended Swiatek's historic 37-match winning streak.
The Polish player faced a very inspired Cornet who did not allow her opponent to construct points the way Swiatek likes to. She was unable to construct rallies and then finish them off as she usually does, opting to go for shots that were very, very risky.
It resulted in 17 unforced errors in the opening set for Swiatek. She lost it 4-6 but opened the second set much better with a more composed play. She was up 2-0 and 40-15 on her own serve but ended up losing that game, reverting back to her first-set play.
From there, Cornet was able to unsettle the Polish player even more, taking a 4-2 lead. She was able to keep her level high, beating Swiatek 6-4, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
It just wasn't Swiatek's day, and on grass, she was unable to find solutions for Cornet, who played well above her usual level to eliminate the World No. 1 player.
