The 2024 Budapest Open will be a clay-court tournament that runs from July 15th to 21st, and details of the prize money have been revealed.
This tournament will be part of the WTA 250 series sandwiched between Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics. With the Games set to take place on the clay of Roland Garros, the Budapest Open will offer some of the qualified players a chance to transition from grass to clay.
Tournament organizers will commit a prize money pot of $267,082, an increase of 3% from last year when Russia's Maria Timofeeva won the event as a lucky loser.
The entry list for this year's edition has already been released. It will feature the return of defending champion Timofeeva, who broke the Top 100. She is one of a handful of Russian players in the draw.
World No. 14 Daria Kasatkina will lead the lineup on her tournament debut. Ekaterina Alexandrova, Yulia Putintseva, Anhelina Kalinina, Diana Shnaider, and Xiyu Wang will be among the high seeds.
This marginal increase in prize money in Budapest will be distributed in all rounds of the main draw, signifying the tournament's commitment to reward players handsomely.
Higher rounds lead to more financial and point rewards. Therefore, the champion is set to earn $35,250 (at least $1000 more than what Timofeeva received 12 months ago) and will be awarded 250 points.
The runner-up will also receive a pay raise from last year. She will earn $20,830 and receive 163 points. For a first-round exit at this tournament, players will earn a paltry $2,890 and receive 1 point.
However, the returns increase substantially by winning at least one main draw match. Players who make it to the second round are guaranteed to earn $4,040 in addition to 30 points.
Quarterfinalists, on the other hand, will pocket $6,608 and receive 54 points, whereas semifinalists will make $11,610 and be awarded 98 points. Be sure to check the full overview of prize money and points below.
