From July 17th to 23rd, fans in Hungary will enjoy the 2023 Budapest Open, which offers $259,303 in prize money as a WTA 250 tournament.
The WTA tournament in Hungary, which is often called the Hungarian Grand Prix or also the Budapest Grand Prix, started already back in 1996, and it's played on the clay courts at the Római Teniszakadémia.
In the past, the likes of Simona Halep, Gisela Dulko, and Jelena Jankovic won the event, but there have been only two champions since the tournament returned to the WTA calendar in 2021. Yulia Putintseva won the event in 2021, and Bernarda Pera is the defending champion, having won in 2022.
Both appear on the entry list for the event, joined by the likes of Anastasia Potapova, Sorana Cirstea, Camila Giorgi, and Shuai Zhang, who will all want to fight for their share of $259,303 that will be distributed in prize money.
The champion gets the biggest slice with 280 WTA points and $34,228 in prize money. On the other hand, for the first-round exit, players will get only 1 ranking point along with $2,804 in prize money.
Yet, that increases significantly for making it to the second round, as players that win at least one match get 30 points and $3,920 in prize money. Quarterfinalists are rewarded with 60 points and $6,418.
Both players that lose in the semifinals of the tournament will get 110 points and $11,275, while the runner-up at the tournament will get 180 points and $20,226.
