The grass season will continue with the 2024 Birmingham Classic, another WTA 250 tournament, for which the draw was released.
After starting in Nottingham last week, the British grass season continues in Birmingham, where another WTA 250 tournament takes place. The event will run from June 17th to the 23rd, with more players attempting to fine-tune their form ahead of Wimbledon.
The top seed in Birmingham will be Jelena Ostapenko, who will start things off against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round of the tournament. It's an interesting matchup because Ostapenko is quite good on grass, while the Italian doesn't have much experience with the green surface. Her best tennis comes on clay, a surface vastly different from grass.
The second seed is Barbora Krejcikova, and she, too, will play at the event. It hasn't been a good year for the former Roland Garros champion, but she didn't play a lot either, having to deal with injuries. The second-seeded Czech will start against one of the qualifiers.
Caroline Wozniacki will also be playing at the event, kicking off her grass season, and it will be against a very tricky opponent, Elise Mertens. That's a challenging matchup for Wozniacki against a fairly solid player on grass who has had a solid year.
The winner of this match can play against former world no. 1, Karolina Pliskova in the second round, as the Czech player will start against one of the qualifiers in her first-round match in Birmingham.
Sloane Stephens will also be part of the draw, starting against Yuan Yue. Alja Tomljanovic, who has dealt with injuries, will also want to start climbing the rankings, starting against Anna Blinkova in the first round of the 2024 Birmingham Classic.
