The 2023 Citi Open in Washington produced probably one of the strongest draws for the WTA 500 event in the calendar.
Running from July 31st to August 6th, the 2023 Citi Open in Washington, also called the 2023 Mubadala Citi DC Open for sponsorship reasons, is one of the first tournaments during the North American swing, which ends with the fourth major of the season, the US Open.
Last year, Liudmila Samsonova won the tournament and this year, she'll defend her title as the eighth seed. Starting in the first round, the Russian will play against one of the wild cards, home player Danielle Collins.
But the 2022 Australian Open finalist isn't the only American in the draw, in fact, there are many more. The top-seeded Jessica Pegula is one of them and already in the second round, she'll possibly face one of the Grand Slam champions in the draw, Sofia Kenin, who has been growing in confidence recently.
Pegula, as all top four seeds, has a BYE in the first round, and that's why she can focus already on the second-round match in Washington. However, two players that can't do that are Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka, who will have a rematch of their Roland Garros clash in Washington.
Jennifer Brady is one of the players in the draw that's making a comeback, and in the first round of the competition, the experienced American will start against Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine, who is always a tricky opponent.
In the second part of the draw, even more star-studded matchups await fans in DC. The third-seeded Coco Gauff will possibly start her journey against the former world no. 1, Karolina Pliskova, in the second round, as the Czech player, who recently split with her coach, will play against one of the qualifiers.
The second-seeded Caroline Garcia also won't have an easy draw as the French player will start against either the 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu or Marta Kostyuk. To see the full draw for the 2023 Citi Open in Washington, be sure to check it out below.
