Former world number one Boris Becker ruled himself out of a return to the punditry team at Wimbledon this year.
Becker was given a two and half year prison sentence for avoiding debts and failing to declare £2.5 million in assets. The three-time Wimbledon champion was released after eight months and has since been deported from the United Kingdom.
When speaking to This Morning, the 55-year-old explained that he will not appear at Wimbledon this year, but that he hopes to return in the future. For many, Becker's insightful commentary makes the Championships even more interesting, and he may also want to enter the country for different reasons, such as a coach, but that won't happen in the near future.
"I miss London, it is my favourite city in the world. I’ve been there for a long time. I’m going to miss Wimbledon this year. I have to take my time before I will be coming back."
Also, in the interview, Becker revealed some details about what his spell in prison was like. He explained that his fellow inmates took well to him and that he encountered a few issues during his eight-month prison spell.
"You’re famous, everyone knows who you are, It can play against you. Thankfully they liked my personality. The only thing you have is your character and your personality. That’s your currency. If they think you have money, you have a problem anyway, so that wasn’t a problem with me!"
Becker was a regular pundit at Wimbledon. However, he has returned to a similar role at Eurosport and provided commentary for the 2023 Australian Open in January. For now, it's very likely that the former German ATP player will miss some of the action in the United Kingdom, while he will provide insights at tennis tournaments in different parts of the world.
