Carlos Alcaraz has already received many accolades during his young career, but he was blindsided by the award he got at a 2025 US Open press conference.
Alcaraz's electrifying playing style is part of what makes him so popular. Some consider the Spaniard the most complete young player in tennis history, and he produces more unfathomable shot-making than any other active player.
But the five-time Grand Slam champion's personality also contributes to his popularity. Alcaraz is known for smiling during matches after memorable shots and rallies, something rarely seen from other players who try to stay focused at all times.
That affable personality extends to his media duties. Even after tough losses, Alcaraz resists the temptation to vent his frustrations at reporters and remains composed while discussing the match.
Alcaraz's temperament and willingness to speak with the media have not gone unnoticed. A member of the International Tennis Writers Association, which represents those who travel worldwide covering the sport, surprised the 22-year-old with his award.
The man informed Alcaraz that the organization used to give a player ambassador award before stopping that tradition since the COVID-19 pandemic. The members decided to bring that tradition back for 2025.
This year's French Open champion was told the members voted him as the winner because of his willingness to speak with the media after both wins and losses, and for being cooperative in areas like feature pieces.
Alcaraz seemed genuinely happy to receive the award, repeatedly thanking the International Tennis Association member while others in the room applauded. Unsurprisingly, the ATP world No. 2 was unaware of the award.
After expressing his gratitude, Alcaraz engaged in some banter with a reporter who jokingly asked if it was the most important trophy he had ever received. The Spaniard answered that he would put it on his bedroom wall.
Humorous comments aside, Alcaraz's sincerity and appreciation for the reporters were apparent. The award is deserved recognition for how impeccably the two-time Wimbledon winner conducts himself.
Alcaraz's great rival, Jannik Sinner, is also accommodating to the press. The pair never engages in divisive behavior in their matches. That was shown by neither man taking a tactical toilet break in their epic five-set French Open final.

Can Alcaraz win a second US Open title?

Sinner has won the last three hard-court Grand Slams, including the 2024 US Open. However, Alcaraz's form since the clay-court swing has been incredible, and he is undoubtedly the most likely to stop the Italian.
Alcaraz will need to negotiate a challenging opening-round match against Reilly Opelka in the Monday night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Opelka possesses one of the best serves in tennis history.
Although a challenging opening match, Alcaraz will still be confident of victory. Aside from the serve, the young star is superior in every department, and Opelka knows he probably cannot afford to lose serve once.
Making an imposing start could be pivotal in allowing Alcaraz to build the necessary momentum to defeat Sinner in the final, assuming the defending champion gets that far.
