Jannik Sinner and
Aryna Sabalenka's accuracy skills were put to the test during a challenge they completed against each other.
The duo have been the No. 1 players on the
ATP and
WTA Tours for several months, although
Sinner's lead at the top was reduced after he failed to defend his Halle Open title in the same week that Alcaraz won the Queen's Club Championships.
Sinner and Sabalenka might be more desperate for success at
Wimbledon than any other players who will be present at this year's event at SW19 after they suffered brutal defeats in the men's and women's finals at Roland Garros.
While practicing for the season's third Grand Slam, Sinner and Sabalenka participated in a challenge in which a tube of tennis balls was placed in the centre of the court about halfway from the service line on each player's side.
Whichever player knocked over the tube on the other side of the net was the winner. Hitting such a small target against one of the best players in the men's or women's game could have taken a long time to achieve.
Instead, the rally shown in the video posted on Wimbledon's social media pages lasted less than 30 seconds. Most of the shots from both players were far away from the tube, understandably because of their opponent's quality and the task of trying to hit the tube on a skiddy grass court.
At one point, Sinner came close to victory with a slice that landed just wide of Sabalenka's tube. That miss would prove decisive a few shots later, when a slice from the Belarusian confirmed her as the winner.
Sabalenka's team celebrated the moment while two of Sinner's team members, including Darren Cahill, did push-ups as a forfeit for their player being defeated by the women's No. 1 player.
The collaboration was done in good spirits by Sabalenka and Sinner and their respective teams. Some light relief like that can be good for players to relax before focusing fully on the competitive action at a Grand Slam.
Sabalenka and Sinner share many similarities. During the last couple of years, they have unquestionably established themselves as the best hard-court players in the men's and women's games.
Sinner has won the last three hard-court major titles since the 2024 Australian Open, while Sabalenka has featured in the last five hard-court women's finals, triumphing in three of them at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Open and the 2024 US Open.
Both players are still waiting for their first Grand Slam on clay or grass. Sinner could not have come any closer at this year's Roland Garros.
He had three championship points in the fourth set, but ultimately lost in a deciding set tiebreak.
Sabalenka took the opening set of the women's final against Coco Gauff at Roland Garros before also falling to defeat. The 26-year-old's words about Gauff in her press conference afterward
caused considerable outcry among many fans.
She claimed that the defeat was down to her mistakes rather than Gauff's good play and argued that Iga Swiatek would have beaten her. To Sabalenka's credit, she subsequently apologized for the comments.
