Fans were left concerned during Anna Kalinskaya's match at the 2025 China Open when she broke down in tears and did not want her face shown on camera.
Kalinskaya faced Camila Osorio in the round of 64. Although the Colombian is among the grittiest competitors on the WTA Tour and has a great attitude, Kalinskaya is a better hard-court player and was the favorite to progress.
However, the former Australian Open quarterfinalist made a terrible start to the contest. Osorio raced to a 6-1, 3-0 lead without requiring exceptional tennis because of how much Kalinskaya struggled.
The 26-year-old looked uncomfortable from the outset, with it being unclear whether she was struggling with a physical issue or just having a bad day. Regardless, she left herself with a mountain to climb after the opening ten games.
Those struggles on Court 3 overwhelmed Kalinskaya. With the score locked at 1-6, 0-3, she became very emotional. The video at the end of this article shows that moment.
This year's Citi Open runner-up stood at the back fence, with her face away from any cameras. The 26-year-old then turned around to play before realizing she was still not ready and appeared to wipe tears away as she turned away again.
Kalinskaya then stood away from the cameras for another 15 seconds. She did not look like moving until many of the fans on Court 3 began applauding in an effort to rally her.
The fans showing their support and understanding might have contributed to Kalinskaya's improved level for the remainder of the contest. Osorio seemed shell-shocked when her opponent reeled off six of the next seven games to take the second set 6-4.
Ultimately, Kalinskaya's efforts proved in vain. Osorio's greater consistency was the deciding factor in the 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory, setting up a round-of-32 contest against the No. 1 seed, Iga Swiatek.

Kalinskaya is not the only player to become emotional during a match this season

At the 2025 Dubai Championships, Emma Raducanu became upset after noticing a man who had stalked her at two other tournaments during the Middle Eastern swing. The Brton cried and hid behind the umpire's chair.
A few months later, Raducanu admitted it took her a while to get over that incident and that it had made her more vigilant about security. The same man tried to buy Wimbledon tickets, but the system flagged him.
Coco Gauff shed tears during her 2025 US Open second-round match against Donna Vekic. The American's well-documented second-serve struggles were visible in the opening set of that contest.
The 2023 women's singles winner at Flushing Meadows had also dealt with much stress before the season's final Grand Slam after splitting from two team members and hiring a biomechanics coach to assist with her serve.
Gauff defeated Vekic but lost to Naomi Osaka in the third round. The American is currently defending her China Open title, and progressed to the round of 16 with a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win against Leylah Fernandez.
