Tomas Machac enjoyed probably the best week of his tennis career at the 2025 Mexican Open in Acapulco. He managed to win the first title in his career.
Machac arrived in Acapulco as one of the seeded players but not one of the top favorites, considering the strength of the field at the ATP 500 event. Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Holger Rune were all among the players competing in Mexico.
However, prior to their second-round matches, they all got food poisoning, which opened up the draw for other players. One of them was Machac, and he used the wide-open draw perfectly.
He beat his compatriot Jakub Mensik, and then also Daniel Altmaier in the first two rounds. Then, instead of playing the top-seeded Zverev, the Czech player took on and beat Learner Tien.
Machac then also bested Brandon Nakashima to set up a final meeting with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard faced four consecutive match points in his first match at the event, but he still managed to reach the final.
On top of that, Davidovich Fokina played in the Delray Beach Open final only a couple of weeks ago, so he may have arrived in Acapulco a bit tired but also in great form.
Both players served perfectly in the first set of the final. Neither faced a single break point, which is why there was only one way to decide the set, and that was a tie-break.
They both played extremely well in the tie-break, too, but ultimately, Machac proved to be the better player, winning the tie-break 8-6 to secure the first set of the match. The Czech player lost only three points on his serve in the entire first set.
Machac lost more points on his serve already in his first service game in the second set, but despite facing a break point, he held his serve.
From there, he was the much better player on the court. Machac broke his opponent's serve twice, while winning five games in a row, to win the match 7-6(6), 6-2, claiming his first ATP title.
This win also secured him a Top 20 breakthrough. He will move up by five places in the newest edition of the ATP Rankings, securing the World No. 20 spot.
Obviously, Machac was excited about winning his first title. He struggled to find words as he was overwhelmed by emotions.
"The emotions right now are just relief, because it was a tough week. Especially when I have this form, I don't like to lose in the final. I'm really happy that I managed to win today because Alejandro was playing really, really good. It was a tough battle. I was serving really well. I think without the serve today, I don’t think [it would’ve] been two sets."
