Jannik Sinner will play his second tournament since returning from a doping suspension, but this time, it won't be in front of an Italian crowd.
Sinner returned to the tennis courts at the Italian Open in Rome, and expectedly, he was warmly welcomed by the Italian crowd. The fans in Rome were happy to see their top player on the courts again, and Sinner was cheered on everywhere he went.
In Paris, that might be different. Not only will Sinner not be in his home country, but the draw was ruthless to him when it comes to the nationality of his opponents. The top seed's first opponent will be Arthur Rinderknech, who is French.
Even if Sinner wins that match, he will take on yet another Frenchman. His second-round opponent would be the winner of the match between Richard Gasquet and Terence Atmane.
During his pre-tournament press conference, Sinner was asked about the reception in the French capital. He was asked what he expected from the crowd, but the Italian player said that he didn't have any reason to expect something special from the crowd.
"It's definitely going to be different. I know that. But I don't think they have something against me, no? It's right that they support the players who are from here, who are local here. It's the same when I play against American players in the US Open. So it's normal."
"I got an amazing atmosphere in Rome because I'm Italian. It's right that the player who play in this city or country, that they got more support. So I know that."
At the same time, Sinner is aware that in the first two rounds, the fans likely won't be on his side. He also thinks some might be a bit colder towards him because of his doping suspension, but he doesn't have any major concerns or feel like he should have any.
"Last year, I also played against some French players here. So I know a little bit what to expect. Different moment because whatever happened happened. So let's see. I cannot answer that question."
Sinner was also asked about his level. On his return, the 23-year-old Italian was able to reach the final at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.
However, he knows that he must not have high expectations in Paris. The best-of-five sets format is different compared to the best-of-three format, which might make things tricky for him in the French capital.
"It's going to be different. I felt in Rome that we have had some stats from that tournament where some were good; some were not where I want to be. And that's exactly how I felt on court, so there is a lot of room to improve. Hopefully we are on time to make small changes for here."
"There are no miracles, no? I need some time. Matches are different than practice sessions. Best-of-five is going to be a great test for me, trying to understand where I am. Let's see how my body will respond here."
