Simona Halep appeared at the ongoing 2025 WTA Finals and made some interesting comments about her future plans.
Halep's career ended in February at the 2025 Transylvania Open on home soil in Romania. The two-time Grand Slam champion suddenly revealed the news after a heavy defeat by Lucia Bronzetti.
That news was entirely unexpected. Halep had returned to tennis at the 2024 Miami Open after the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced her doping suspension from four years to nine months.
Although she was hampered by fitness issues during her comeback, Halep seemed determined to keep fighting. The manner of her defeat by Bronzetti seemed to make her realize that it would never happen.
While a sad ending for the former WTA world No. 1, fans have enjoyed seeing her at the WTA Finals. Garbine Muguruza, who also won two Grand Slams and reached No. 1 in her career, was another high-profile player in attendance.
In an interview with the Tennis Channel, Halep was asked about the possibility of coaching a player in the future. She did not rule it out, but does not think it would be a good idea at the moment because of the energy needed for the role.
"Right now, no, I’m not thinking about it. Probably in the next years. I don’t have energy to do this. This means to travel again, I just like to feel at home more time now."
The 2018 French Open champion was then asked about what she does and does not miss about being a professional player. Halep likes not sticking to a strict schedule, but admitted she does miss the adrenaline of competing.
"I don't have a schedule anymore. I can just wake up in the morning and not have anything to do. But of course I need this rest. I had so many years working every day. Pressure, the tension, everything, made me a little bit to be burned out. Now I enjoy life and I enjoy the free time.”
"The adrenaline I miss, winning matches, playing matches, the pressure that I had during the matches, all the work for the team, the people around."
When asked the question, Halep did not want to predict a WTA Finals winner. However, she mentioned that Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, the current No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players, have been the most dominant in women's tennis.
"In the last few years, [Aryna] Sabalenka with [Iga] Swiatek, pretty dominant in tennis. They have confidence, extra confidence. Always I said that who is coming here to the WTA Finals has their own chance to win this tournament because they are the best players in the world. So they have to be confident that they have their chance. I’m not good at picking, just the best to win."
The opening four days of the WTA Finals were very entertaining. Moments included Elena Rybakina stunning Swiatek and Madison Keys unexpectedly asking Amanda Anisimova not to shake hands after she lost to her compatriot in three sets.
