Simona Halep shocked the tennis world by suddenly announcing her retirement from tennis at the 2025 Transylvania Open in Cluj.
The start of the 2025 season has been derailed with injury struggles for Halep. Since returning to tennis last year, she struggled to stay healthy. That's also why she was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open this year.
After that, the Romanian player announced that she would play in front of her home fans at the Transylvania Open in Cluj. She fulfilled her promise and appeared on the tennis court at the WTA 250 event.
In the first round of the tournament, Halep took on Lucia Bronzetti. From the moment the first ball was hit, the former WTA World No. 1 player struggled to keep up with her opponent.
Although Bronzetti is the World No. 72 player and lost five of her seven matches this year, she was the better player in this match. Halep won one game in the opening set, but that was all she could do, losing it 1-6.
The two-time Grand Slam champion wasn't able to find any inspired level in the second set either, and after exactly one hour of play, she lost the match 1-6, 1-6.
It looked like just another loss for the 33-year-old player, but that changed a few minutes after the match. Halep addressed the crowd in Cluj, and even her compatriot and fellow WTA player, Sorana Cirstea, was present, with the two sharing a hug.
It was becoming increasingly clear that it wasn't just another loss for Halep. Addressing the crowd in Romanian, she announced her retirement from professional tennis.
Halep realized that returning to the level she was once able to play at might not be possible, especially since her body kept betraying her. That's why she has decided to end her professional tennis career.
"I don't know if it's with sadness or joy, I think both feelings. But I'm making this decision with my would, and I've always been realistic with myself and my body."
"I wanted to come here today in Cluj to play in front of you and say goodbye on the court. Even though my performance wasn't very good, it was still my soul and I'm very glad that you came."
Although fans were certainly disappointed to hear about Halep's decision to retire from the sport, she gave them a glimpse of hope, too.
The Romanian player hinted that she might change her decision in the future, but given her age and injury struggles, it's very improbable that she could return to the courts and be competitive again.
"I wonder if I'll come back again. But for now, this is the last time I've played here. I don't want to cry, it's a beautiful thing. I became World No. 1, I won Grand Slams, it's all."
"Life goes on, there is life after tennis and I hope we will see each other again. Of course, I will continue to play tennis, but to be competitive it requires much more, and at this moment, it is no longer possible."
At the end of the day, Halep enjoyed an incredibly successful career. She has won two Grand Slam titles and reached the World No. 1 rank.
Although the final years of her career were overshadowed by her doping ban and subsequent fight to prove her innocence, Halep was certainly a player that millions of fans will remember for decades.
