Novak Djokovic will be a threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, according to fellow ATP player Lorenzo Musetti.
Alcaraz and Sinner might be the brightest stars on the ATP Tour at the moment, but often, experience surpasses youth and power, and that's something that could happen at this year's Australian Open. At least, according to Lorenzo Musetti.
Sinner and Alcaraz are the top two favorites to win in Melbourne. The Italian player will be the defending champion. On the other hand, Alcaraz won two of the last three majors played.
Both are just big favorites to win the title and with their emergence, one player sometimes seems to be forgotten. Djokovic might have missed out on a Grand Slam title in 2024, but he won an Olympic gold medal, which was his ultimate goal.
On top of that, his experience is incredible. He is a 10-time Australian Open champion. He competed at the event 19 times, so he has won it more times than he has not, and he has won 94 matches at the tournament.
On the other hand, Sinner and Alcaraz's numbers look like rookie numbers compared to the Serbian, even though both have already built Hall-of-Fame careers.
Combined, they have won one title in Melbourne and 22 matches. That's nine fewer titles than the 37-year-old legend, who has also won 72 more matches at the Australian Open than these two players combined.
Musetti is aware of the Serbian's qualities, even despite his recent loss to Reilly Opelka at the Brisbane International. Musetti talked to the South China Morning Post during his participation at the Hong Kong Open, warning fellow youngsters.
"Novak will always be [competing for grand slams] if his physical condition is stable. He is a danger for everybody – for Jannik, for Sascha and for Carlos Alcaraz."
Musetti, of course, recognized the incredible 2024 season that his Davis Cup teammate Sinner had. At the same time, he has enough experience himself to know that players like Djokovic should never be counted out.
"Last year, Jannik showed he was one step ahead of everyone else, he had such an incredible season. But Novak is always dangerous and he knows a little bit about how to play on those grand slam courts and in those conditions."
Musetti also talked about his personal aspirations. In 2024, he reached the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships, which made him believe that he could succeed at every Grand Slam.
In 2024, he wants to reach the second week of every major, and the Australian Open will be his first goal, as he has won only one main draw match in Melbourne in the past.
“Wimbledon gave me a lot of confidence for the slams; I had never gone so far. My best Australian Open result is second round and I can do better this year. I have the confidence to achieve my goal of going to the second week of every slam.”
