Novak Djokovic shed some light on his split from coach Andy Murray, who has worked with him since the start of this season.
Djokovic and Murray formed a high-profile partnership at the end of the last season, with the two starting to work together early this year. Their first Grand Slam together, the Australian Open, went well before the Serbian injured himself.
In recent weeks, the 24-time Grand Slam champion started struggling to achieve the same results as before, and with Roland Garros nearing, Djokovic had to make a decision about his partnership with Murray.
Ultimately, the two split, ending their short but certainly fruitful collaboration. Now, ahead of his next tournament, Djokovic spoke about why he parted ways with Murray.
Djokovic confirmed his new coach, Dusan Vemic, and speaking to L'Equipe, the 37-year-old, he also explained the details of their split with Murray.
"I can't tell you more than what you read in our statements. We said we weren't in a long-term commitment. Australia was a test. We then said we would work in Indian Wells and Miami. On clay, we would go tournament after tournament. And we agreed on this split."
"We felt like we couldn't get more out of that partnership on the court. My respect for Andy remains the same. And it's even greater now that I've gotten to know him better as a person. He has a brilliant tennis IQ. A rare champion's mindset. He sees the game in an incredible way."
"But, how can I put it, we didn't achieve together what we hoped to achieve in terms of results. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We tried."

What is Novak Djokovic's special connection with Geneva?

The Geneva Open is a special tournament for Djokovic. He came to the city to prepare for Roland Garros, but there is also a different reason why the 37-year-old Serbian competes at the ATP 250 event in Geneva.
Djokovic actually has family who lives in Geneva, and his uncle even works in the city. On top of that, his cousin recently gave birth to a baby in Geneva, and he wanted to see all of them.
"Yes, I have family who have lived here for many years. My uncle works here. One of my cousins just gave birth to a baby, whom I'm going to see for the first time. That's one of the main reasons I'm here, because I like spending time with my family, with people I grew up with and don't see often..."
"My wife and children will arrive on Wednesday. My parents are here. It's going to be a family affair! We're negotiating with the organizers to occupy half the stadium for my match."
Djokovic will now focus on the professional side of his trip to Geneva. He will take on Marton Fucsovics in his first match at the 2025 Geneva Open.
