Jack Draper won't play his second-round match at the 2025
US Open, withdrawing from the event because of an injury.
Draper entered this year's US Open without much playing time. He missed the entire North American swing, with his last tournament before the New York Slam being the Wimbledon Championships, his home Grand Slam. The reason was
an arm injury.
However, when the British player appeared on the court for the mixed doubles event at the US Open and even competed at a very high level, it seemed that any injury talks were a thing of the past.
In his first-round match in New York, Draper beat Federico Agustin Gomez in four sets. During his post-match press conference, the British No. 1 revealed that he had felt pain during the match, which hinted at potential future struggles.
"I've definitely had to rein in my serve a little bit to make sure to keep the pain down. That's for sure. At the same time though, I feel like my accuracy is almost a bit better at times. So, it's definitely something which it's not giving me pain on my serve and that's not why I'm doing it. But it's one of those things where the ramp up is quite quick to be here."
"And so I couldn't sort of go full out on the serve. The last few weeks, I've got used to kind of maybe toning it down a little bit. And yes, so I'm not serving full out pretty much."
It's clear that Draper's injury was at least as serious as he described it, because he withdrew from the tournament before his second-round match against Zizou Bergs, announcing his withdrawal on social media.
"Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US Open. I tried my very best to be here and give myself every chance to play, but the discomfort in my arm has become too much, and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support."
What's next for Jack Draper after the US Open withdrawal?
Currently, it's unclear how this injury will affect Draper's future plans. Before withdrawing from the US Open, he signed up for plenty of events in Asia, likely wanting to make up for the lost time.
If the Brit recovers in time, he should appear on the court already for the
ATP 250 event in Chengdu, which starts on September 17th. He is the highest-ranked player on the
Chengdu Open entry list.
After that, Draper also added his name to the list of players competing at the Japan Open in Tokyo. That is an ATP 500 event and starts on September 24th, one week after the Chengdu Open.
Of course, like every top player, Draper then intended to compete at the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season in Shanghai. That event starts on October 1st. However, all those plans are currently in jeopardy.
