Iga Swiatek successfully kicked off her clay-court part of the season at the 2025
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, winning her second-round match.
Swiatek probably couldn't wait to get her socks dirty this year. She couldn't win a title on the hard courts in the opening months of 2025, but with the change to the red dirt, the Polish player suddenly became a big favorite to win every event that she enters, despite being without a title for almost a year.
Like many top players, the
WTA World No. 2 chose to begin her season at the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart. The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is one of the most popular WTA 500 tournaments on the calendar, and the fact that the four highest-ranked players play in Stuttgart just proves that.
Swiatek's main rival, Aryna Sabalenka, already
made it to the quarter-final without having to play. The Polish player, on the other hand, had to play her second-round match, but it wasn't an issue at all.
The two-time Porsche Tennis Grand Prix champion took on Jana Fett in her first match. Fett is ranked 153rd in the world, and she had to go through the qualifying in Stuttgart, but her first-round win over compatriot Donna Vekic proved the Croatian's qualities.
Against Swiatek, however, she didn't stand a chance. The second seed was the better player from the moment the first ball was hit. She started with an early break and despite failing to add the second one despite having four break points at 4-1, it didn't have to bother the Pole.
Swiatek eventually added the second break, winning the first set of the match 6-2, which was an ideal start to the clay-court part of the season for her.
But Fett didn't give up after losing the first set. Quite the opposite. The Croatian had an excellent start to the second set, breaking her opponent's serve to lead 2-0.
From that point, it was a one-woman show in Stuttgart. Swiatek won six consecutive games to win the match 6-2, 6-2, securing a quarter-final spot at the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Swiatek's next opponent will be either Emma Navarro or Jelena Ostapenko. The 23-year-old will likely root for Navarro, as she has beaten the American in both of their previous meetings.
On the other hand, Swiatek has played five times against Ostapenko in her career, and she never managed to beat the Latvian player.
