Sloane Stephens gave fans some news on how the injury that has kept her out for almost two months is progressing during an interview with Ben Shelton.
Stephens' last appearance was at the 2025 Merida Open, where she lost in the opening round to Petra Martic. She had been given a wild card for the 2025 Indian Wells Open but could not use it due to the injury.
The 2017 US Open champion sustained a foot injury in Merida. That injury prevented her from playing at the ongoing 2025 Rouen Open, which she won last year by beating Magda Linette in the final.
Stephens appeared on the Tennis Channel on Monday and participated in an interview with Ben Shelton after his thrilling deciding-set tiebreak victory against Borna Gojo at the 2025 Munich Open.
Shelton asked Stephens when she would return to the court. The 32-year-old admitted she did not know the exact date yet, but is sure about seeing Shelton at next month's 2025 French Open at Roland Garros.
"Me? Honestly, I have no idea. I just got my boot off last week but tell your dad I miss him because I love seeing him on TV. I don't know, I'll see you soon, I'll definitely see you at the French."
Stephens probably means she will see Shelton in a playing capacity at the French Open and not as a fan or analyst. There is an element of doubt since the former world No. 3 also said she had no idea.
In addition, Stephens would need a wild card or to come through qualifying to reach the main draw because she has slipped outside the Top 100 and was not on the women's singles entry list for the Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
Nonetheless, Stephens meaning she will be playing in Paris is the most likely explanation. The eight-time WTA title winner might be hopeful of receiving a wild card because of her run to the 2018 final.
However, the French Open's past actions prove that a wild card is far from certain. Tournament organizers caused widespread outrage by not giving two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem one for his final appearance at the event.
Stephens undoubtedly hopes to end the wretched run of form she experienced before her injury when she returns. Since securing the Rouen Open title and winning two matches at the 2025 Madrid Open almost 12 months ago, Stephens has only managed two victories.
That includes ten consecutive defeats since her last win at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The most high-profile of those losses was blowing a 6-0, 4-1 lead against Clara Burel on Arthur Ashe Stadium at the 2024 US Open.
It will be interesting to observe how much Stephens plays when she returns. The former Grand Slam champion has a busy life off the court, including running her self-care brand, Doc & Glo, and doing terrific humanitarian work with her foundation.
Tennis is undoubtedly better with Stephens actively involved. Her natural charisma and fluid playing style make her a fan favorite. Hopefully, she will return to form after returning.
