There have been reports suggesting that Iga Swiatek might be considering skipping this year's Wimbledon Championships, and the Polish player now addressed the situation.
Swiatek has never been the best grass-court player. It's her worst surface by far, which her results on the low-bouncing surface only prove. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where she has yet to go through the quarter-final stage.
With her struggles on the grass courts, reports from Poland about Swiatek possibly skipping Wimbledon this year seemed very realistic. The 23-year-old has yet to win a trophy since last year's Roland Garros, and taking time away from the courts during her least favorite part of the season seemed very reasonable.
However, those were only reports, which is why Swiatek obviously faced the question about possibly making such a decision ahead of this year's Italian Open in Rome.
The five-time Grand Slam champion was surprised to learn that something like that appeared online, saying that she has seen "millions" of different reports that are not true, including this one.
"Who said that? Shouldn't believe this stuff. During the past few days, I saw a million comments that were not true."
During her press conference, Swiatek confirmed that unless she gets injured, she will certainly compete at Wimbledon this year. She also couldn't understand the origin of such reports.
"I don't get it. There are so many theories right now I would say especially in Polish media about me that are not true. I think, I don't know, you guys like to make some articles that will attract people. I get it. It's part of the job."
"But yeah, for sure I'm not going to skip Wimbledon. I really want to learn how to play on grass better. Every year is another opportunity. I will play Wimbledon, for sure, unless I get injured."
Swiatek will enter the 2025 Italian Open as the defending champion. She failed to defend her title in Madrid, and if the same thing happens in Rome as well, there is a real chance she might lose her World No. 2 rank.
She will obviously try to prevent that, and her coach, Wim Fissette, will try to help Swiatek achieve that goal. The Polish player was also asked about her collaboration with Fissette, and despite failing to win a title together so far, she had only good things to say.
"I feel like I worked on some technical stuff on my serve and my forehand. I know that I haven't been always able to implement that on the match court, which is not perfect. This is tennis. I don't have, like, three months to change some technical thing, then your body just remembers it."
"It would be much easier if we had a system like that. My pre-season was short. I'm kind of catching up in between tournaments to improve the technical things. Yeah, I feel like some things have been better because of Wim, like my serve."
"I feel like I also, yeah, wasn't so good at implementing it all the time. Sometimes I changed the way I play in a way I shouldn't have done, and it's completely kind of on me. Sometimes I make little bit wrong decisions. I think it's because of me wanting to, I don't know, play faster or finish the rally faster instead of being solid and building it."
"That's why I was talking at the beginning about the discipline. Yeah, I think it's all pretty connected. But I'm happy with the work I'm doing with Wim. So I'll just continue. I'll also try to be more, yeah, disciplined and make some nice better choices on court."
