Iga Swiatek might make a radical move and skip this year's
Wimbledon to prioritize her mental health and rest ahead of the last part of the season.
Only a bit more than a year ago, it seemed that no one would be able to dethrone Iga Swiatek from the
WTA World No. 1 rank. The Polish player was beating one opponent after another, even having an iconic 37-match winning streak.
Swiatek has won five Grand Slam titles so far, but it's been almost a year since she last touched a trophy. The 23-year-old's last triumph came at
Roland Garros this year. In 2024, Swiatek won the Madrid Open, the Italian Open in Rome, and the French Open, back-to-back-to-back.
She failed to defend her Madrid Open trophy, losing to Coco Gauff in the semi-finals, and it seems that Swiatek might be considering a radical decision after Roland Garros.
The WTA World No. 2 player plans to play in Rome and at Roland Garros, as arguably there aren't any other two tournaments where her chances of winning would be greater, but the latest reports suggest that Swiatek might skip the grass-court part of the season altogether.
Swiatek isn't the best player on grass. She never made it past the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and in five appearances, she has managed to win only 11 matches, so slightly above two per tournament, which is by far her worst mark out of all majors.
Skipping Wimbledon would make sense, and that' exactly what she's considering, according to the Polish publication
Przeglad Sportowy. The report from the publication suggests that if the tournaments in Rome and Paris are unsuccessful for Swiatek, she could take some time off and return ahead of the
US Open.
That's in line with what Piotr Wozniacki, father of former WTA World No. 1 player Caroline Wozniacki, who has Polish roots, suggested recently. According to Wozniacki, Swiatek and her team could use some time away from the courts.
"I would suggest that all people working with Iga take a vacation. Not watch tennis, not talk about tennis, not contribute to writing articles that are being written one after another, because there are also people responsible for communication with the media, etc. They should give themselves and Iga in particular some rest. A chance to look at everything from the sidelines for a while."
Swiatek could skip the Wimbledon Championships this year not only because she doesn't usually perform well on grass, but also because she doesn't defend many points, which would allow her to take time away.
She wouldn't be the first tennis player to do that. Amanda Anisimova, for example, previously took a break, and it seemingly helped her, as she won the biggest title of her tennis career after returning to the sport.
