The 2025 Moselle Open in Metz's draw is significantly weaker than initially expected after several withdrawals from the tournament.
Before the ATP Finals, which will be held from November 9th to 16th, the Moselle Open and the 2025 Athens Open will be completed. They are the final 250-level tournaments until the 2026 season begins in January.
Often, events in the final week before the ATP Finals do not have the strongest entry lists. It seemed like the Moselle Open might be an exception to that rule when an outstanding lineup was announced a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, many of the players' fans would have been most excited about watching have since withdrawn. That includes 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who enjoyed a late-season surge.
Medvedev parted ways with his coach of more than eight years, Gilles Cervara, after the 2025 US Open. Despite enjoying much success together, many felt the decision should have been made earlier since he had not won a title for over two years by that point.
Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke replaced Cervara. After good runs to the China Open and Shanghai Masters' semifinals, Medvedev ended his trophy drought by winning the Almaty Open title.
Medvedev played what turned out to be his final match of 2025 in the Paris Masters quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev. The former world No. 1 had two match points to win, but ultimately succumbed in a deciding set tiebreak.
After that grueling battle, Medvedev decided to end his season. He has played many matches since the US Open, making the move entirely understandable. 2026 could be a good year for him after his improved confidence in recent weeks.
Frances Tiafoe was also on the initial entry list. However, the American announced a while ago that he was ending his season early after a challenging year, which was probably a sensible move.
Tiafoe also split from his entire team, including coach David Witt. Choosing to no longer work with a man who has successfully coached Venus Williams and Jessica Pegula is bold, but he did not play his best in 2025 winner Witt's guidance.
The local fans have been devastated by Ugo Humbert's withdrawal. He was born in Metz, and his title run in 2023 was one of the most memorable moments in the tournament's history. The Frenchman has not played since retiring from his Swiss Indoors semifinal.
Tallon Griekspoor was another notable man who removed himself from the Paris Masters entry list. The Dutchman is among the most entertaining ATP players and has played many epic matches against Alexander Zverev.
Tomas Machac's withdrawal was another disappointing moment for the tournament. The Czech has endured some disappointing results this season, but his overall development in the past few years remains impressive.
The other players to withdraw were Alex Michelsen, Gabriel Diallo, Benjamin Bonzi, and Zizou Bergs. Felix Auger-Aliassime's place is also uncertain after his run to the Paris Masters final. The Canadian's ATP Finals hopes could depend on whether he plays in Metz.
