Frances Tiafoe has taken decisive action ahead of the 2026 season by parting from his entire team, including coach David Witt.
During August and September of last year, Tiafoe played some of the best tennis of his career. That occurred shortly after Witt, who has coached Venus Williams and Jessica Pegula, joined the team.
Tiafoe finished as the runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Cincinnati Open. A few days later, the Italian's doping case became public after the five-month investigation into it had been kept private.
The American followed that success in Cincinnati by reaching the 2024 US Open semifinal, a run that included victories against Ben Shelton and Grigor Dimitrov before a heartbreaking five-set loss against Taylor Fritz.
Rather than building on those results, Tiafoe finished 2024 badly and then had a poor 2025. The 28-year-old
has already ended his season, which was probably a wise move.
In an Instagram post, Tiafoe confirmed that he has split from his team. The former world No. 10 expressed genuine gratitude for their support, but thinks it is the best move as he prepares for the 2026 season.
"2025 season has come to an end early this year for the kid. It wasn’t the season I hoped for, but lots of lessons learned on and off court. I want to give a huge S/O to my team. I’ve been with these guys for several years. We’ve shared some incredible moments that I’ll remember forever."
"That being said I’ve decided it’s time for a change. I truly appreciate the love..energy…passion and brotherhood. It’s been a great ride and only bigger and better things for all of us ahead. Excited for what’s ahead for me and ready to put the work in. Thanks for all the love and support thru it all. The best is yet to come."
Witt also posted on Instagram to confirm the news. Despite his message being brief, its tone revealed the good relationship they continue to share despite their split.
"Thanks, Big Foe, for the ride this last year and a half. Some things come to an end, but good memories, great times, and a friendship last forever. Thanks, brotha - nothing but love."
Although parting from someone with Witt's experience comes with some risk, it is an understandable decision. Tiafoe has not played near his potential for over a year, and he could be a wasted talent.
Tiafoe is not the only man who made a coaching change
After almost three years together,
Grigor Dimitrov and Jamie Delgado split last month. The British coach was instrumental in the 34-year-old's significantly improved results after a barren few years.
Jack Draper swiftly acted to hire Delgado, who has also worked with Andy Murray, as his leading coach. The 2025 Indian Wells Open winner had a successful four-year partnership with James Trotman.
After years on the road with Draper,
Trotman wants to spend more time at home with his family, but retains a close relationship with the man he coached to become one of the best
ATP players.
