Grigor Dimitrov's recovery from his physical struggles will now be done without his longtime coach after the Bulgarian split with Jamie Delgado.
By the end of 2022, Dimitrov was at his lowest ebb. The 2017 ATP Finals champion had not won a title since winning the year-end championships, or reached a final at any level since the 2018 Rotterdam Open.
Dimitrov needed someone to inspire him before his career ran out. He was 31 at the start of 2023, and few expected him to climb back up the rankings and consistently challenge at tournaments again after five barren seasons.
Delgado's appointment at the end of 2022 acted as the catalyst Dimitrov required. Under the Briton's guidance, the 2014 Wimbledon semifinalist had a concentration and solidity that had been missing for the previous few years.
In 2023, Dimitrov reached his second Masters 1000 final at the Paris Masters, losing to Novak Djokovic. He was also a finalist in Geneva and a semifinalist in Shanghai, and reached the fourth rounds of the French Open and Wimbledon.
Dimitrov's performances improved further in 2024. The ATP veteran won his first title in over six years at the Adelaide International, overcoming Holger Rune. He was also the Miami Open runner-up and reached two other finals in Marseille and Stockholm.
In 2025, Dimitrov's good results include semifinal and quarterfinal runs at the Miami Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters. Unfortunately, those achievements were overshadowed by Dimitrov's increasing physical fragility.
He had retired during the previous four Grand Slams before suffering one of the most devastating moments of his career. The Bulgarian led Jannik Sinner 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 in the Wimbledon quarterfinal, but then suddenly tore a chest muscle.
Dimitrov has been absent from the ATP Tour since then. It has now been confirmed that the heartbreaking retirement against Sinner was Delgado's last match as his coach after he announced their split on social media.
"After a few years and great achievements together, Jamie Delgado and I have decided to part ways amicably. I wish him the best in his future endavors. I'm excited to start fresh after this time I've dedicated fully to my recovery. I'm looking forward to coming back to play soon."
Delgado will always remain one of the most pivotal figures in Dimitrov's career. He played a key role in his renaissance since the start of 2023, and it is nice that they remain on good terms after parting ways.

Dimitrov is not the only player currently absent from tennis

Jack Draper will not play again this season because of an arm injury. He withdrew before the second round of the US Open and determined it would be best to spend the rest of 2025 recovering.
That meant Draper had to withdraw before the 2025 Six Kings Slam. He was replaced by Stefanos Tsitsipas, a move that raised some eyebrows since the Greek has endured a challenging year and sits outside the Top 20.
Beatriz Haddad Maia will also not play again in 2025. The Brazilian has also had a tough season, and she wants to recharge mentally before returning with new intent next year.
