Alexander Zverev made a startling admission after his 2025 Australian Open final defeat to Jannik Sinner, but he now regrets it.
Zverev was soundly beaten by Sinner in Melbourne in straight sets. The German had been performing impressively throughout the tournament, but never came close to seriously challenging the ATP world No. 1 in the final.
That was Zverev's third consecutive Grand Slam final loss. Being emotional after missing out once again on a maiden major title was understandable and probably did not come as a shock to anyone inside the stadium.
However, Zverev's brutally honest reaction to the loss caused a stir. He called himself simply not good enough and claimed Sinner does every part of the game better than him, except serving.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, Zverev wished he had not said that and now thinks it is important to keep believing that his moment in a Grand Slam will eventually come.
"After losing that kind of final and a lot of emotions go through your head, a lot of things go through your head. And sometimes I also say things that I regret."
"I kind of regret saying that maybe I’m not good enough. I have to keep believing in myself and believe that I am good enough to win Grand Slams, and I am good enough to become world No 1 if I keep improving."
The world No. 2 now thinks a more accurate assessment is that the final against Sinner in Melbourne was not good enough and pointed to how close he came in his previous two Grand Slam finals at the 2020 US Open and 2024 French Open.
"In Australia, in the final, it was not good enough. I lost in three sets, so that was quite simple. The other two finals, I lost in five sets. In one of them, I had two sets to love and a break up, serving for the match in the US Open final against Dominic Thiem. That one I regret."
"Against Carlos, I was two sets to one up, so I feel like I had a lot of chances. In Australia, I wasn’t good enough in that on that particular day and in that particular moment."
Although Zverev's initial comments after the Australian Open were quite worrying, being that downbeat after another major final loss was understandable. His explanation of them will give his fans hope that the elusive Grand Slam title will come.
Zverev will play in entirely different conditions at the Argentina Open. The South American tournament, which always generates great atmospheres, is played on high-bouncing clay courts that require some getting used to.
Unfortunately, Zverev's stay in Buenos Aires got off to the worst possible start when his bags were accidentally brought to the Maldives. The German could scarcely believe the situation in his social media announcement about it.
This year's Australian Open runner-up will not have another opportunity to win a first Grand Slam until the 2025 French Open in May and June. Several tournaments, including five Masters 1000s, will be played first.
