The 2025
Stuttgart Open is one of two tournaments that will kick off the
ATP Tour's grass-court season from June 9th to 15th, and the
entry list has been released.
After being a clay-court event for many years, the Stuttgart Open reverted to grass in 2015. Rafael Nadal won the maiden edition played on grass by beating Novak Djokovic's close friend Viktor Troicki in the final.
Jack Draper won his maiden ATP title at last year's iteration of the German tournament. The Briton managed a terrific victory against the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up
Matteo Berrettini to lift the trophy.
However, Draper is not on the entry list for 2025. Unless he accepts a late wild card into the tournament,
this year's Indian Wells Open Champion will not return to defend his title in Stuttgart.
World No. 2
Alexander Zverev will be the top seed if he does not withdraw from the tournament as long as world No. 1 Jannik Sinner does not take a late wild card, which seems highly unlikely.
Zverev withdrew from the 2024 Stuttgart Open after reaching the final of the 2024 French Open at Roland Garros, losing a five-set battle to Carlos Alcaraz. Playing a few days after that experience was never feasible.
The tournament organizers know Zverev could withdraw again if he has another deep run in Paris this year, which he believes is his most realistic chance of winning a maiden Grand Slam.
Although having the world No. 2 and a home player for the Stuttgart Open would undoubtedly enhance interest in the tournament, there are many other notable names on the entry list aside from Zverev.
Taylor Fritz is another top player who plans to compete in Germany. He was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2022 and 2024. His run to that stage last year included a five-set victory against Zverev in the fourth round.
Although hard court is Fritz's best surface, as proven by
his finishing as the runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 US Open, his huge serve and powerful groundstrokes make him a threat to any opponent on grass.
Lorenzo Musetti will hope to improve even more on grass after reaching the final of the 2024 Queen's Club Championships and the semifinal at Wimbledon a few weeks later. He has also enjoyed a terrific clay-court swing so far this year.
Ben Shelton is another man with a big game that can flourish on grass. Despite the American never playing on the surface until the start of his ATP career, many have tipped him to succeed on it. Many will hope to avoid facing him in Stuttgart.
Nick Kyrgios is set to make his first singles appearance since the 2025 Miami Open in Stuttgart. The controversial Australian returned after a lengthy absence with knee and wrist injuries at the start of the season, but has been in pain with those problems during his matches.
Frances Tiafoe,
Denis Shapovalov, last year's runner-up Berrettini,
Gael Monfils, and
Tommy Paul were among the other names on the Stuttgart Open entry list.
