Next month's 2025 French Open at
Roland Garros promises to be an exceptional tournament, and the women's
entry list has been unveiled.
Iga Swiatek continued her dominance of the clay court Grand Slam last year. She won a fourth title in five years and a third consecutive crown. The 2021 iteration was the only blip she has had in Paris.
Swiatek has yet to win a title in 2025, but that is unlikely to dent her confidence for the clay court season. Her incredible success on the dirt means a lack of form on hard courts does not matter as much.
This year's French Open will also be her first with Wim Fissette, who became the Pole's coach in the closing stages of 2024. Fissette, who had two spells with Naomi Osaka, might feel pressure to keep Swiatek's streak at Roland Garros going.
Coco Gauff was the 2022 French Open runner-up. Despite not winning a Grand Slam or
WTA 1000 title on clay yet, the American is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world on the surface.
Gauff has an opportunity to turn her form around at Roland Garros and in the tournaments before it. The 21-year-old started the year strongly by helping Team USA win the United Cup, but has struggled for form since the Australian Open.
World No. 1
Aryna Sabalenka endured near misses and frustration in the previous two years of the year's second Grand Slam. She lost a thrilling semifinal to Karolina Muchova in 2023 and was
affected by an illness in last year's quarterfinal to Mirra Andreeva.
Sabalenka was Swiatek's most significant challenger in the 2024 clay court season. The Belarusian lost one of the greatest women's matches ever in the Madrid Open final despite having three match points and was also the runner-up to Swiatek at the Italian Open.
Reaching last year's semifinal represented a breakthrough moment for Andreeva since it was her first at the Grand Slam level. Unfortunately for the teenage prodigy, she did not produce her best tennis in the semifinal against
Jasmine Paolini.
Andreeva will likely be even more dangerous at the 2025 iteration after her improvements since, which led to the 17-year-old winning WTA 1000 titles
at this year's Dubai Championships and Indian Wells Open.
Elena Rybakina has an opportunity to improve on two quarterfinals at Roland Garros. Hopefully, the Kazakhstani is healthy after some fans
were left concerned by her allergies during last week's Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.
Qinwen Zheng will return to the scene of her greatest moment next month. The Chinese No. 1 won an Olympic gold medal last year at Roland Garros. Her memorable run to that success included a semifinal win against Swiatek.
2025 Australian Open champion
Madison Keys' hopes should also not be ruled out. She is a former semifinalist at the clay court Grand Slam, and her blistering game is dangerous on any surface when it fires.
The entry list also includes last year's runner-up Paolini,
Jessica Pegula,
Petra Kvitova,
Paula Badosa, and
Amanda Anisimova.
