The 2025
Ningbo Open is the penultimate
WTA 500 event in the calendar, and the
draw for this tournament has already been released.
The WTA season continues even after the last WTA 1000 tournament of the season in Wuhan. Although many players who don't have a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals anymore
skip this part of the season to better prepare for the next season, the Ningbo Open still has one of the best WTA 500 draws of the season.
Last year, Daria Kasatkina, who was one of the players to
end her season early this year, won the title in Ningbo. In the final, she beat her good friend
Mirra Andreeva. This year, the 18-year-old superstar will appear in the draw again, but this time as a top seed.
As such, Andreeva has a first-round bye and doesn't have to worry about a first-round match. However, her second-round match can be quite worrisome, as the teenager could take on the 2021 US Open champion,
Emma Raducanu. The Brit will start against Lin Zhu.
Jasmine Paolini is on the opposite side of the draw. She is the second of four players fighting for a spot at the WTA Finals. Paolini will begin her journey against Veronika Kudermetova or rejuvenated Shuai Zhang.
The third player trying to secure a spot in Riyadh is
Elena Rybakina. The Kazakhstani is the third seed, and her draw has been similarly brutal to that of the top-seeded Andreeva. Rybakina might have to play against the Canadian Open champion,
Victoria Mboko. The Canadian will take on the always unpredictable Dayana Yastremska.
Ekaterina Alexandrova is the fourth, and last, player in the draw, or in general, with a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals, even though her chance is really low. She had the most favorable draw out of the top seeds, starting against Yue Yuan or Xinyu Wang.
Fans of Czech tennis will have mixed feelings when looking at the Ningbo Open draw. The reason for that is simple. Fans in Ningbo will have a chance to see an all-Czech first-round blockbuster between
Marketa Vondrousova and
Karolina Muchova.
Although that promises to be a great match, many Czech fans will feel like both women would have a chance to fight for a title in Ningbo if they didn't clash in the first round. The winner of this match will then play against Diana Shnaider or Xiyu Wang in round two.
Belinda Bencic is the sixth seed in Ningbo, and even though she knows her first-round opponent, she has no clue who her potential second-round opponent could be. The Swiss player will start against Magda Linette, but the second-round opponent for the winner of this match will come from a match between two qualifiers, who are yet to be determined.
