The
draw for the 2025
Madrid Open, which is the second
ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season on clay, has been released.
Although the Madrid Open is a clay-court tournament, the conditions in the Spanish capital are quite different compared to most tournaments played on the red dirt.
The altitudes of the cities where the Monte-Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and Roland Garros are held are very low. In Madrid, the altitude is much higher, which makes the air thinner, and that means that the balls fly faster.
Those conditions perfectly suit players who like clay courts, but at the same time, they can benefit from a big serve. One player like that is this year's top seed,
Alexander Zverev.
The Madrid Open will be the last tournament played without the reigning World No. 1, Jannik Sinner, and, unless Zverev ascends to the World No. 1 spot in his career or benefits from withdrawals in the future, also the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament for him as the top seed.
Like all seeded players, Zverev has a first-round bye, which means that he will start his tournament in the second round. The German knows that he will play against one of the home players, as he will take on the winner of the all-Spanish clash between
Roberto Bautista Agut and
Jaume Munar.
Zverev won a title in Munich last week, which will certainly give him plenty of confidence.
Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, will be coming to Madrid after
losing in the Barcelona Open final.
Alcaraz is a two-time Barcelona Open champion, and he was looking to add his third title in the city, and the same will be the case for him also in Madrid.
The young Spaniard has won the Madrid Open twice before, and he will want to add his third trophy this year. Alcaraz will await the winner of the match between
Yoshihito Nishioka and Zizou Bergs in the second round of the tournament.
There is one player who can never be counted out, and his name is
Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is the fourth seed in this year's draw, and he landed in Alcaraz's half, which means the two could meet already in the semi-finals.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner wasn't given an easy draw as he could play against
Matteo Arnaldi or one of the qualifiers.
Holger Rune, who will be coming off the Barcelona Open title, was also given a very challenging draw. The young Dane will have to take on the winner of the match between Flavio Cobolli and
Fabian Marozsan in the second round.
There is one unseeded player in the draw that everyone wanted to avoid. His name is
Joao Fonseca, and he will start against a qualifier in the first round. If the 18-year-old prodigy succeeds, he will take on the 11th-seeded Tommy Paul.
